I would be very interested in learning to compose, but I had a difficult time learning counterpoint (apparently Cage never took to harmony well either). What materials does one recommend for the aspiring composer without academic support?

What are the topics we should discuss in this blog? Give us a thoughtful starting text.

what are the questions?

from ben boretz

...am I wrong to think that it’s the traditional intellectual role of composers to raise the really far-reaching, radically searching questions about music? If I’m not wrong then I’d ask: what count as questions like that for music now, for composers now? I’m still trying to ask questions like that, but mine are naturally continuous extensions from an earlier time; for someone who came into the world as a composer within the last 25-30 years the issue of what core of musical convention is essential to expose and penetrate and renew probably has to look radically different – and that’s what Perspectives wants and needs to know about and to represent.
